Abstract:
In order to study the influence of variable geometry parameters on the transient state performance of variable cycle engines (VCE), the Virtual Power Extraction Method (VPEM) is developed, and the VPEM model of a twin-spool mixed flow turbofan engine is used to study the influence of the nozzle throat area and the turbine nozzle guide vane (NGV) throat areas on the transient state performance of the turbofan engine. The VPEM model of a double bypass VCE is established, and it is employed to study the influence of high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) turbine NGV throat areas, the nozzle throat area and the area of the rear variable area bypass injector (RVABI) on VCE transition state performance. Results show that the interaction mechanism between variable geometry parameters and the VCE transient performance is the same as that of a turbofan engine. The additional power of the HP spool caused by 5% increase of the nozzle throat area, the HP and LP turbine NGV throat areas are 1.9%, 6% and 3.5% respectively, while those of the LP spool are -3%, 22% and -7% respectively. The influence of the RVABI area is week.
